Army of the Dead fans are in for another treat as Netflix is going to release Army of Thieves, a prequel movie to the popular series. But, unlike its predecessor, the movie isn’t grim and bloody. Army of Thieves is a fun thriller romance that is awaiting its release on Netflix on October 29, 2021.
The Netflix Original film is primarily based around Ludwig Deiter, the world’s best safecracker, in the zombie apocalypse series. Fans will have an opportunity to learn more about the character, how he got involved in a life of crime, and why he was so willing to run into perilous situations to crack the fabled Gotterdammerung safe.
What gave rise to the idea of ‘Army of Thieves’?
After seeing his captivating performance in Army of the Dead, the creator, director, and producer of the Netflix Original, Zack Snyder came up with the concept of a follow-up film surrounding Deiter, played by Matthias Schweighöfer.
Snyder’s wife and primary producer of Army of the Dead, Deborah Snyder was particularly interested in the project due to an oddity – the two films belong to completely different genres. Army of the Dead was a zombie apocalypse thriller while Army of Thieves is a romantic heist.
Army of Thieves has Ludwig Deiter as the protagonist in a reprising role from Army of the Dead. The film is based six years before the events of Army of the Dead, during the beginnings of the zombie breakout.
Matthias Schweighöfer not only plays the eccentric character on-screen but is also the one behind the camera lens – directing the movie. The German actor, director, and producer has directed several movies he has starred in. Likewise, he jumped at the opportunity to return to the role in this film, shot in the Czech Republic in 2020.
More about other stars
Matthias Schweighöfer isn’t the only experienced artist working on the film. Army of Thieves also stars Nathalie Emmanuel as Gwendoline. The actress is best known for her supporting roles in Game of Thrones and the Maze Runner.
