How can a TikTok ban impact artists like Taylor Swift?

The TikTok ban in the US has been a topic of debate and discussion for some time, citing concerns of the app’s ownership by ByteDance, a Chinese company that raised data privacy concerns. Although federal responses against the app have been in motion, with TikTok challenging the battle in the court, the future of the app alongside its dependents hangs in the air. However, if the restrictions do materialize, the entire music industry will have to resort to the old ways of promoting artists like Taylor Swift.

Should the US put a ban on the app, record labels that handle each and every artist will be left with no option other than putting their money back into artists’ development. Despite being a Universal artist, Swift defied her label by putting her music back on TikTok just weeks later after Universal artists’ music disappeared over a licensing stall, according to Reuters last year

. Even a self-made billionaire recognizes the seismic impact of TikTok, which eclipses its social streaming counterparts since otherwise loss of revenue and access becomes inevitable.

Although a ban on the platform would be a creative coup de grâce, stifling artistic expression and its reach, there is good news on the ongoing courtroom battle.

Is a TikTok ban imminent despite its assumed after effects on personalities like Taylor Swift?

When the discussions first took air about the TikTok ban, the catalyst was none other than US president Donald Trump. Trump was inherently opposed to the platform in his first term, whose trials of banning the app on national security grounds saw no fulfilment. However, following the Republican’s concerns and alerts from the US officials, Trump wanted a US company to buy the platform. When that did not happen, his successor Joe Biden signed a law to restrict TikTok.

Though Trump is now back on the throne, he has flipped the script. At a press conference last week, he said he has a “warm spot”

for the platform, assuring his administration will try to mitigate the ban. While Trump and Swift are not exactly the best of friends,

it turns out the lifting may actually be beneficial for the Eras superstar. Moreover, since she is not the sole beneficiary of this crusade, who knows the prospect of a doomsday might just get scratched from their cards after all.
