Just when the world was going head over heels for Sydney Sweeney, following her audacious climb in Hollywood, the actress was found in unexpected chaos, all over an unintended political crumb from her mother’s birthday celebrations. The Euphoria

star pulled out all the stops to make her mother’s 60th birthday special in 2022. However, backlash and criticism followed suit when she and her brother, Trent Sweeney, uploaded pictures from the birthday bash of her family and friends sporting MAGA-inspired hats and Blue Lives Matter merchandise. 

The birthday party was set in a rodeo theme. While there was no intended political deliberation, a few attendees wore hats with the phrase “Make Sixty Great Again,”

a sly nod and parody of Donald Trump’s political slogan for the Republican Party, “Make America Great Again.”

As soon as the pictures circulated on the Internet, the blowback was inevitable, with fans pointing out the insensitivity in using those phrases and merchandise in a celebratory context.

Sydney Sweeney tried to mitigate and stressed her mother’s birthday bash was never meant to become an “absurd political statement.”

She finally broke her silence on the matter the next year.

Sydney Sweeney knew that no matter what she said about the MAGA controversy surrounding her mother’s birthday, it would only worsen the state of the matter. However, in 2022, she ultimately addressed the matter to Variety, setting the record straight once and for all. The polyglot actress

recalled the surge of “misinterpretations

,” revealing, “the people in the pictures weren’t even my family.”

According to Sweeney, those caught in the lens donning the MAGA-inspired hats were her mother’s friends, who did not think it through, and genuinely thought “it would just be funny.”

She explained that the people who brought the merchandise have kids who walk in the Pride parade. Since they were going to Idaho, they thought it would have a comedic effect. Although her explanations did not lessen the row of conflict, she lamented and expressed her frustration over the public scrutiny she faced over a far-fetched assumption.
