The rise of the streaming era has witnessed the simultaneous uptick of streaming services. However, having been in the rat race for quite some time, Netflix has barely fumbled in viewership or popularity. While the streaming mogul never hits the brakes in the rollout of its original content, Netflix has also earned a reputation for outbidding its counterparts. But the icing on the cake? Netflix has balanced the streaming frenzy with a blend of classical modernity. As the streamer stacks up to cater to the global audiences, it prompts a natural curiosity regarding its subscription schemes.
So, for those in the same boat of daze about how Netflix pans out its subscriptions worldwide, here is the streaming scoop.
10 countries that pay the most for Netflix subscriptions
Netflix has become a household name, and the streamer even marked a colossal milestone with 301.6 million subscribers last year. Although the increase of streaming fanaticism was already loud and clear during the COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix has reportedly outdone the record it set in 2020. While 301.6 million subscribers is no small feat, Netflix subscribers have been very vocal about the relentless price hikes since.
To add to their frustrations, the subscription plans across the borders deviate abundantly. To help readers understand the difference, one has to begin with Switzerland
, the country with the most expensive standard Netflix plan as of now. Next on the list is shockingly the USA
, followed by Denmark, Ireland, the UK, Belgium, Singapore, the Netherlands, Italy,
and Germany
, respectively.

While the diverse price points across nations are understandable, keeping in mind their purchasing power, how jaw-dropping exactly is the gap?
The most expensive Netflix subscriptions and their cost
Switzerland
According to Love Money, Switzerland has the costliest
ad-free Netflix plan, priced at $22.93 per month
, eight times the cheapest Netflix membership tier available in Pakistan. Although the Swiss are affluent, they are not alone in the heartbreak. Even the US subscribers have been hit with a not-so-great streaming price point.
USA
A monthly standard ad-free Netflix plan in the US ranges from $15.49 to $17.99.
Today, the streaming giant remains the most popular OTT platform in the country, even though they have fewer projects to pick from at 6,863. However, Amazon Prime recently outdid the streamer with the most in-demand movie library, and who knows?

It might as well catch up to its streaming popularity in no time, especially with the price hike growing more and more unfavorable.
Denmark
Next on the list is Denmark, which reportedly has 1.7 million subscribers. The standard Netflix subscription plan in the Nordic nations starts at $17.91.
Ireland
Ireland is not too far from Denmark’s subscription cost, priced at $17.88/ month.
The country has a reported flux of 1.4 million subscribers. However, they have more movies and shows to choose from at 7,826. Following Ireland, it is the UK.
The UK
UK subscribers recently experienced a spike in February. The current standard ad-free plan in the UK is worth $16.52
. While it is still a lot compared to the cheapest nations, it is relatively more affordable than most subscribers pay in continental Europe.
Little rant, but the fact that it’s 2025 and you still need to pay an over priced premium to watch in HD on subscription services is ridiculous. Like it’s an extra £6 on top of what you already pay for now tv to just get bog standard HD, wtf😖 pic.twitter.com/14YMHSUmHY

In fact, the plus point is that subscribers have a content library of 8,038 titles, giving them an edge in streaming count as opposed to the US and Canada.
Belgium
Moving on, Belgium has the next most expensive Netflix plan, running at $15.54.
Although the cost is more than Dutch viewers pay, it is on par with subscribers in France. Belgium has 2.3 million subscribers with 7,561 titles in its library.
Singapore
Singapore comes next with an ad-free Netflix plan priced at $14.72.
Considering the local purchasing power, the cost is significantly higher than what Americans, Canadians, and Europeans (most) pay. It is even more than its neighboring Malaysia, but the streaming giant is the leading OTT platform with 1.8 million subscribers.
The Netherlands, Italy, and Germany
The Netherlands comes right after, which runs at $14.50
per month, the same as Italy. Although the former’s library is bigger than the global average, Italy’s is smaller than most European counterparts.
After adding nearly 19 million subscribers in December 2024, giant film firm, Netflix has resolved to increase prices of subscription in bits with an intent to help improve Netflix.

Even then, Netflix leads the market in the latter with a whopping 5.7 million subscribers. Moreover, Germany matches the Netherlands and Italy. However, unlike the rest of Europe, it has lucked out in affordability.

While these diverse price points are nothing new
, what exactly triggers the hike every now and then?
What makes Netflix subscription price hikes so inevitable?
In the final quarter of 2024, Netflix reported a record subscription boost, especially after venturing into the live sports streaming era and, of course, with new content. As of 2025, not a day has gone by without the streaming giant building the hype for something new. But with the good news also came a fair share of bad news. Following their largest subscription jump ever during a three-month period, putting their total to an estimated 302 million global subscribers, Netflix announced its plans to raise the cost of its subscription plans.

As per CBS Money Watch, in the US,
the standard plan went up from $7.99 to $17.99, while the premium package was priced at $24.99 from $22.99. Adding an extra member now costs $8.99 from $7.99.
According to the streaming giant, this shift
in the price point comes in response to “local market changes,”
including local taxes or inflation
.

During the updating, Netflix notified viewers with emails upon signing on to Netflix with details about the change, a month before the billing date. While the price boost should have lessened the craze about Netflix, the streamer is undeniably doing something right, pulling in viewers from across the globe with far bigger plans in the store,
despite the eye-grabbing changes.
