SpaceX is going to space with an all-civilian crew for the first time and Netflix will document it step by step. The documentary titled Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space is coming to the platform this September.

We’re underway for a rather different documentary because it’s the first time an all-civilian crew is heading on a space mission. In addition to that, the documentary will be near real-time, making it a unique specimen. This means we’ll get to watch the events almost as they’re happening. We’ll see how the crew is trained, how they make their journey, and how they return to our planet in this 5-episode SpaceX docuseries of Netflix. The producers and the director are big, too.

Time Studios will help the documentary while the director is Jason Hehir, who also directed The Last Dance. As you might remember, it was a quite popular documentary that told about the brilliant career of the legendary basketball player Michael Jordan. Hence, expectations from Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space is high, too. Let us remind you that Hehir also has an animation / live-action hybrid documentary in the works. Its title is StoryBots Space Adventure, and it’s about the children’s questions to the crew of Inspiration4. That documentary will be on Netflix on September 14th, just a day before the launch. We’ll see whether Hehir will pull them off just like The Last Dance.

What is the release date of Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space?

The first two episodes of Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space will be on Netflix on September 6th. Those episodes will show us how the crew and captain Jared Isaacman are trained before their take-off, which will take place on September 15th. The remaining episodes will probably come to Netflix throughout the month. The final episode is going to be a feature-length one. It will recount the whole story and show us the return to the Earth. It will also feature some footage from inside the spaceship.

This September, four civilians will launch into space for a three-day trip orbiting Earth.

The flight crew’s captain Jared Isaacman had something to say about the documentary, too. He expressed his astonishment at the situation, stating that he didn’t expect things to get this big when they started.

“Never imagined a Netflix documentary when we kicked off @inspiration4x just 8 months ago. Amazing how fast things come together.”

He also revealed the charities they are going to help with the revenue of Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space.

“Proceeds from this directly benefit @StJude & our $200 million fundraising objective.”

For those unfamiliar with the situation, St. Jude is a prominent children’s research hospital. It seems the crew gives ample importance to kids as there’ll also be an animated children episode for SpaceX’s Inspiration4 mission.
