Since its premiere on Netflix, The Witcher
has come to be known for several things, ranging from its costume, performances, plot, or the lack of, to Henry Cavill
. For the longest time, most discussions about The Witcher
revolved around the Geralt, specifically that of Cavill’s. However, as a new season with Liam Hemsworth is reportedly done filming, the sentiment still stands alongside another long-standing The Witcher
accusation; source inaccuracy.
As the man behind the masterpiece, Andrzej Sapkowski, releases a new book, Crossroads of Ravens, the inaccuracy of Netflix’s portrayal of the series is as clear as never before.
Andrzej Sapkowski causes discourse as he reveals Geralt’s age
That Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher books and Netflix’s The Witcher
series are not twins is a tale that became widely known within the drop of the first few episodes. But that they were not even first cousins became clear, as Sapkowski revealed in Crossroads of Ravens that Geralt was born in 1211, by that calculation making him 20 years old when he earned his Butcher of Blaviken title.
While one could argue that the series is quite literally based on a fantasy land labeled Continent, the age reveal is quite the splash-making pebble because it discards even Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Geralt. The actor who has forever left an impression as Geralt definitely does not look like a twenty-year-old at any point in the series, given his special training regime for The Witcher
.
This inaccuracy, however, is one that fans do not have many qualms about letting go, as it involves Cavill. This does not discard, however, that the series has been on a tangent of its own.
The many inaccuracies of Netflix’s The Witcher
One thing that sends down as many shivers down the audience’s back as a horror series is Netflix gaining the rights to their favorite book series and adapting it. And with how the makers of Netflix’s The Witcher
are being accused of simply borrowing the lore by the majority of the fanbase, the fear is definitely reasonable.
While the romance between Yennefer and Geralt may have become the highlight of the show, fans who have read the book know just how inaccurate the portrayal is. This, along with the series trying to feed vicious characters as morally gray, stands as two of the most glaring inaccuracies of the Netflix series.
