The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich mentioned whether season 3 is going to happen in a press conference.
Ever since the first season of The Witcher dropped in December 2019, fans of this Polish saga have adored the series. The Witcher got a quick renewal for season 2 after a successful debut. However, the production process of the second season hasn’t been easy. Apart from the obvious, which is the pandemic restrictions, Henry Cavill injured himself while filming a stunt. All those combined gave the crew some hard time to shoot the series.
In the end, though, the new season is a wrap now. It’s been some time since the crew finished filming The Witcher season 2. Better yet, we got a release date and learned the titles of the episodes. So, fans are now waiting eagerly for The Witcher season 2 to drop on December 17th, 2021.
Is The Witcher season 3 happening?
What’s going to happen after season 2 though? Are there going to be more seasons of The Witcher? The answer is not that clear according to the showrunner Lauren Hissrich. That’s why the crew works diligently to make the show go on. Netflix is notorious for canceling some fan-favorite series, after all. We wouldn’t want it to come to an end out of the blue.
“There has been no formal renewal,” says the showrunner. “In fact, right now my focus is on Season 2. I mean, we have this airdate now, we’re going to launch on December 17. There is still a lot of work to be done in post-production. So I’m back and forth between Los Angeles and London completing that, and that is just where all of our focus is right now. Because we need a great Season 2 if we have a hope of having a Season 3.”
It seems everyone is focused on delivering a great second season before we get to think about a possible third season. Still, we do not expect Netflix to cancel The Witcher unless season 2 turns out to be a disaster. The Witcher is an excellent series in terms of the number of viewers, so the crew can make up for a slightly bad season.
The showrunner is excited about season 2
The second season of The Witcher does not seem like it’s going to be average, though. In an earlier interview, the showrunner of The Witcher talked for the boosted confidence of the crew after the successful debut of the series. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said that they were taking more risks unlike how they did in season 1.
“The truth is, by the time the show launched in December of 2019, we were already immersed in Season 2,” she said. But in terms of the production, the renewal gave everyone permission to take a lot more chances, bigger gambles. It just gives everyone that sense of confidence they need to find new levels. Some of the things we’re working on right now are just beyond comprehension in terms of size and scope. I could not be more excited.”
Well, if the showrunner is that much excited, I think we, too, can be impatient to see the new season of The Witcher. Let’s hope the new season is good enough for the series to go on. We’ll see whether that will be the case when The Witcher season 2 launches on Netflix on December 17th, 2021.
