Potential DC director McG opened up about how his planned Superman film with J. J. Abrams fell through.
Before Bryan Singer was brought on board to direct Superman Returns, DC was courting McG to direct a film based on the Man of Steel. Hot off the heels of Charlie’s Angels, McG was one of the most sought-after directors in the industry. He eventually agreed to direct Superman: Flyby, which was written by J. J. Abrams. The DC film’s script has been floating around online for the better half of a decade and the general perception regarding the hypothetical film has been wholly positive. Unfortunately, the film was scrapped just as McG was about to direct it.
McG recently opened up on a podcast about how his Superman film fell through, in part due to his fear of flying.
“So I’m going to make the Superman movie and I’m getting ready to go, and they’re like, “We’re going to Australia, we’re going to Australia,’ I literally remember telling the bosses at WB at that time, ‘I can’t go to Australia. I’m afraid of flying, I can’t do it.’ And it didn’t even register [with them]. They’re like, ‘You’re McG, you’ll be fine. You’re the boisterous, happy guy. You’re bouncing off the walls. You’ll be fine.’ Anyway, the plane’s on the tarmac — the Warners private jet meant to take me to Australia — and I can’t get on. I get fired off of Superman — rightfully so; they’ve got to make the movie in Australia. They put Bryan Singer on the movie.”
Bryan Singer didn’t immediately take over the Superman film as the script had to be rewritten. It’s unfortunate that the brass at DC weren’t able to accommodate McG’s request to film somewhere that didn’t require flying. That being said, J. J. Abram’s unproduced Superman script is still worth a read, and will hopefully be produced one day if DC wants to go the What If…? route for their properties.
Henry Cavill’s Superman, the first hero in the DCEU, was last seen in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Here is a plot synopsis for the film:
“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”
The Snyder Cut stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, JK Simmons, and Ciarán Hinds.
The film is available on HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
