It’s been almost a month since the infamous Chris Rock and Will Smith incident at the 2022 Academy Awards. But the slap is still echoing in the movie industry. After multiple studios dropped their projects involving Smith. Another major studio has seemed to decide to shelf a movie, including the Academy Winner.
Let us take a look at which movie has now succumbed to the slapgate controversy.
Another studio drops Will Smith
According to reports, Netflix has decided to call quits on their much-awaited Bright sequel starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton in their previous roles. It has been announced that Netflix’s cancelation of the project was “unrelated to the incident.” However, the other projects that dropped Will also stated the same.
Last summer, a rumor said that the script was being fine-tuned and that Netflix anticipated Will Smith and Joel Edgerton‘s return. This indicated that a sequel to Bright was in the works. Until recently, filmmaker David Ayer was also to return, but he stepped down when development stalled.
Bright 2 is the latest film featuring Smith to be canceled by Netflix. Netflix also canceled the film Fast and Loose. Fast and Loose‘s stalling was rumored at the time to be due to director David Leitch exploring another project at another studio rather than the Oscar slap.
Netflix has not completely abandoned the Bright franchise since an animated spin-off film was produced last year, Bright: Samurai Soul.
Will we be seeing any of his projects this year?
Even though many studios are not willing to work with Will, we should be seeing him host a new nature series for National Geographic later this year. But for now, there is no news about him starring in any other project.
However, if you are a fan of the actor or just feel bad that his projects are getting canceled, luckily Netflix has a huge library of Will Smith films for you to stream.
Do you feel that what Will has been going through since the incident at the Oscars is justified? Or do you think that his actions should not affect his professional career? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
