‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’: Willem Dafoe Comments on Green Goblin Return Rumors

Willem Dafoe won’t confirm if he’s returning as Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Spider-Man: No Way Home has practically achieved legendary status among comic book movie fans despite airing no footage and having its plot stem from rumors and leaks. Earlier last year, it was reported that the third film in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy would actually serve as a jumping-off point for a live-action Spiderverse picture. Rumors and reports quickly began to suggest that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would return as their respective Peter Parkers, joining forces with Holland’s. Their respective villains would also return, as reports revealed that Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina would return as Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus, respectively. Jamie Foxx is also expected to return as Electro.

Earlier this year, Alfred Molina confirmed that he would be returning as Doc Ock, revealing that he was told to keep quiet about his role. Shortly after Molina spilled the beans, Willem Dafoe was asked if he’d be returning in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and he playfully dodged the question.

With No Way Home‘s release imminent, Dafoe was asked by The Wrap if he’d be appearing in the Spider-Man film. Dafoe dodged the question by reminding the outlet that he was there to promote Anapurna Interactive’s 12 Minutes, but he understood why the interviewer felt compelled to ask the question. The outlet followed up by asking if Dafoe’s comment on starring in No Way Home would be “no comment”, the actor agreed.

“I’m afraid so. I got lots of stuff happening now. And, you know, I always feel like when a film comes out, that’s when it’s time to talk about it.”

While Willem Dafoe didn’t explicitly deny working on No Way Home, he also hasn’t confirmed it, maintaining a fair middle ground. Of course, all signs point to Dafoe appearing in the Spider-Man film and he’s likely just keeping mum until there’s an official announcement.

Tom Holland’s Peter Parker was last seen in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Here is the official synopsis for the movie:

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks is quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks. Spider-Man and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) join forces to fight the havoc unleashed across the continent but all is not as it seems.

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the film stars Tom Holland, Jake Gyllenhaal, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, Numan Acar, J.B. Smoove, Oli Hill, Remy Hii, Marisa Tomei, Michael Keaton, Jon Favreau, Cobie Smulders, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
